But for a select bunch of romantic partners, the occasion doubles as the anniversary of their wedding.
Such is the case with Bathurst couple Rahul and Sarah Verma, who are celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary today.
With their wedding anniversary falling on Valentine's Day, Rahul said the occasion is always easy to remember.
"We picked the date and stuck with it, and our anniversary is always a special occasion," he said.
Love is all about finding that balance between respect and honesty.
- Sarah Verma
Sarah said the decision to get married on Valentine's Day has served as a good omen for their relationship.
"It has been a big five years, but we're as close as ever."
In the five years since their wedding, Rahul and Sarah have been busy building a family of their own.
The pair currently has one daughter, four-year-old Sameera, and are set to welcome twin boys into the world in the coming weeks.
"It's important to find a good balance between work and family," Rahul said.
Rahul and Sarah have spent much of their marriage going on overseas trips, which have helped build cultural appreciation within their young family.
"We took Sameera to Singapore and Vietnam on our last trip, which allowed her to experience different cultures," Sarah said.
"In the last five years, we've been to four or five different countries," Rahul added.
Both Rahul and Sarah agree that Valentine's Day takes on a variety of meanings among different people.

"It gives people a reason to say things you should really express to your significant other every day," Sarah said.
"Love is all about finding that balance between respect and honesty."
"Valentine's Day isn't just about showering your partner with romance and gifts, it's also about the love we share for our families," Rahul added.
"While Sarah and I will use tomorrow to celebrate our marriage, I'll also be taking Sameera out on a 'date' to Annie's for some ice cream."
