The green and white was in action, hosting Riverina in a trial match at Spooner Oval ahead of the Rams' first championship game of the new year at Blayney next month.
The opening round clash against the Greater Southern Region Tigers at King George Oval gifts Western a chance to kick-off 2020 in style, having knocked off the Tigers 60-12 in their only win in the under 23s format so far last year.
Kicking off their campaign with a victory will go a long way towards lifting Western into the championship's finals, and Saturday's trial against a strong Riverina has this year's crop of Rams - headlined by Group 10 player of the year, Hawks' lock Nathan Potts and star Wellington fullback Will Lousick - primed to contend.
Cameron Greenhalgh's under 23s side wasn't the only Western team kicking off its 2020 campaign last weekend either, with Jess Skinner's women's outfit also playing in a trial.
She says her Rams girls are a young side in 2020, with some of the top tier talent in previous groups going on to play in the Harvey Norman Women's premiership this season.
We've got a green team this year.
- Western women's coach Jess Skinner
She says that pathway shows there's plenty of talent in the Western area, and a round one date with the GSR Tigers at Blayney is firmly in their sights.
"We've got a green team this year," Skinner said.
"There's lots of new players coming in. The game is growing and the quality is there. We lost some depth but the young players are eager to learn, and that's exciting."
Some of that youth, too, is quite experienced as well, with the likes of Heidi Regan and Molly Hoswell key outside backs, but only young themselves.
Skinner said the likes of Kayla Hasson and Lailee Phillips were also great leaders for the side, but skipper Haylee Lepaio is the one leading from the front.
"Haylee wasn't feeling the best on Sunday, she played sick but that's why she's our captain. She's prepared to lead from the front and she did that against Monaro," Skinner said.
"Our attack has changed and a little bit but we saw that coming together in the second quarter against Monaro too.
"We didn't get the win, but there's plenty of positives to take into our next trial against Riverina, and they'll be strong."
