Mayor Bobby Bourke said the $5 million facility has generated really positive feedback for Bathurst Regional Council, which was praised for the initiative.
"I think they just like the concept of it and it was new," he said of the feedback.
"I was with James Tobin from Sunrise [on Saturday] and he couldn't believe the size of it."
The museum offers a range of different exhibits, including a massive HO scale model layout the size of a tennis court with a light and audio visual display, a historic train carriage, and a dedicated children's learning and play space.
Cr Bourke said the museum offers something different the the city's other cultural facilities and he predicts it will become the most popular in Bathurst.
"I think it will become the most popular of all. The car racing museum gets a lot of visitation around race time but this one I think will be right up there with the motor racing museum," he said.
He encouraged people to take a look at the museum now that it is open to the public.
It is open six days a week between 9am and 4.30pm, closing only on Thursdays.
