The second Australian death from coronavirus (COVID-19) has occurred overnight when a 95-year-old nursing home resident in Sydney died.

This comes after a 78-year-old man in Perth who died from the infection.

Some 10,000 people have been tested for COVID-19 across the country with more than 40 confirmed cases, of whom 21 have now been cleared, Australian Associated Press reports.

A Western NSW Local Health District spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday morning that people have been entering hospitals across the region fearing they have contracted coronavirus.

"We have conducted tests because people are asking to be tested," she said.

"We have had no confirmed cases."

A Central West GP says there are certain age groups more at risk of coronavirus, with some pre-existing conditions leaving people more susceptible.
