Councillor Warren Aubin has made a fresh request that the car park alongside Hereford Street, near the low level bridge, be sealed under the 2020-21 Bathurst Regional Council budget.
"I put in a request probably four or five years ago and it has never made it above the line, but hopefully it will this time," he said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
He has already spoken to the director of corporate services and finance about sealing the car park and those positive discussions led him to believe that funding will be made available.
Cr Aubin said this project would end up saving council money in the future.
"I don't see why every rain event council should be going there and grating it," he said.
"We should be sealing it."
Sealing the car park will also make it better for people who leave their cars there while they walk the river, particularly parents with prams and dog walkers, he said.
The other reason Cr Aubin wants the car park sealed is for safety.
He said that rocks from the car park are tracked out onto the road and, with poor visibility up Hereford Street, motorists often rush out of there and slide on the rocks.
Sealing the car park would improve the situation, he said.
In addition to sealing the car park, Cr Aubin hopes to see lines added to "make it a formal car park" and maximise the space available.
Cr Aubin said the work on the Hereford Street car park may also encourage more people to park there and walk the rest of the way to the central business district.
If the project does get funding in the budget, Cr Aubin said it should only take a few days to complete.
