Plumbers are warning people using tissues or baby wipes in lieu of toilet paper will cause blockages in your sewage systems.
Zane Somerville, a plumber with Luke Bennett Maintenance Plumbing, said using baby wipes or tissues is far from ideal.
"Toilet paper is designed to break down, other paper isn't," he said.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
"Paper towels will cause blockages, baby wipes will definitely cause an issue. They even cause problems at sewerage treatment plants, because they don't break down at all.
"Some of them say they can be flushed, but they can't be. They actually cause massive problems.
"When I was working in Sydney, one the biggest hurdles Sydney Water came up against were big balls of baby wipes, some of them were the size of a car.
"They block everything up and are no good all. Using anything but toilet paper is going to be a problem."
He said new toilets will also be more likely to block if people are using tissues or baby wipes.
"A lot of the new toilets are lower flush, and they definitely won't cope as well as older toilets."
Mr Somerville said he understood some people had no option but to use tissues given the current toilet paper shortage, and said he wouldn't be surprised to see an increase in call outs due to blocked toilets.
"I am expecting some calls, we've already spoken to a few people who've used tissues through necessity," he said.
Mr Somerville said it was difficult to tell how long it would take for a toilet to block, saying there were "many variables."
