The Bathurst trainer had already qualified Electrified for the $500,000 finale at Royal Randwick but was hopeful of getting Press Box to join her stablemate, after she came up short of a top two finish in the Central District Racing Association Qualifier.
Press Box took a rails run behind the leaders into the straight but with 200 metres to go she didn't have the speed to match it with the front runners.
Two Big Fari and Bobbing (both $6.50) broke away from the pack to take the vital top to qualifying spots in the wild card race.
Mirfin's runner was 5.5 lengths off the winner.
Bathurst will still have two horses featured in the final after Gayna Williams won the CDRA race with her favourite Healing Hands.
The final is still scheduled to go ahead at Royal Randwick on April 4.
