But as they say, a win's a win.
Animal, trained and driven by Amanda Turnbull, was sent out at super short odds for Wednesday night's Bling It On Pace (1,730 metres) and got to the lead just at the right time to get the better of a gallant Pacman Hammer ($18, Jake Davis).
While Animal is used to leading in his races Turnbull was happy to take the sit and wait for the opportunity to strike.
"I knew he'd keep going but he hadn't had a run for a while so he got a nice sit," she said.
"It's probably not his go as much - he usually likes leading - but I didn't think I'd be able to cross those two if they didn't score up.
"Once I got into there I thought that would be perfect because he hadn't had that run lately."
Animal would have needed to put in the hard yards to cross in the early stages, and opted to sit back as Pacman Hammer led out a fast group of starters.
Womenwhiskyngold found the death seat, ahead of Animal, with Carinya Gold taking the sit behind Pacman Hammer.
Turnbull had to make her move three wide on Animal when Womenwhiskyngold couldn't stay alongside Pacman Hammer with 400m to run.
But Animal didn't race up alongside Pacman Hammer like many would have expected.
Instead, the Mathew McCarthy-trained leader continued to sprint home with fervour, forcing Animal to really lift in order to hunt him down.
Class prevailed as Animal came home to win in a 1:57.5 mile rate.
