Seed packets and vegetable seedlings have been quickly snapped up from garden shops across the region, including at the Churches Garden Centre on Seymour Street.
On Wednesday morning, a fresh delivery of vegetable seedlings had arrived, however owner Andrew Churches was expecting to be all sold out by the afternoon.
"Many people are staying at home now, so gardening is something than can do to pass the time," he said.
"We've seen strong sales across the board, but I think it's because people want something to pass the time, rather than panic buying."
Mr Churches said many gardening shops across the region have been cleaned out of stock because the demand wasn't previously there because of the drought.
"We were doing it hard across the board during the drought and when the demand came, we just didn't have enough," he said.
"Now that it's been raining a bit more, we're expecting the supplies to pick up soon."
For the people that do panic buy seed packets or seedlings, Mr Churches has said they won't grow overnight, with some seedlings taking months to mature.
"We do tell them it's not instant," he said.
"If you put in a mix of broccoli, cabbage or cauliflower, it's not going to grow for a while."
He said vegetable seedlings like garlic, lettuce, kale and onion are great value, but particularly lettuce as it grows "quite quick".
Churches Garden Centre was open 60 years ago by Mr Churches' father.
