The plan sets out council's strategy and action plan to minimise its dependence on fossil fuel energy sources.
It has a primary focus on alternatives to grid-sourced electricity, but also considers and makes recommendations about transitioning away from natural gas and liquid fossil fuels.
OTHER RECENT ECO NEWS COLUMNS:
Council is to be congratulated on the preparation of this most detailed plan, which provides an excellent framework for our future.
Council also needs to be congratulated for the work it has done to date in reducing its energy usage, its use of fossil fuels, and in transitioning to renewables.
However, the plan must be much more progressive.
- Council must acknowledge that climate change is also a most important reason for change, while accepting the significant economic benefits.
- The targets proposed must be much higher, with a more rapid transition than that proposed. Many NSW councils have a target of 100 per cent renewable electricity usage by 2030. (The proposed 50 per cent by 2025 for Bathurst is not adequate.) It is very important that Bathurst Regional Council be seen to be acknowledging science, and to be at the forefront of adopting new (but proven) technologies and industries. Bathurst has a deserved reputation for being a leader in a number of fields. It is most important that this also applies to energy transition
- Council must explore mechanisms for increasing the uptake of rooftop solar on domestic and commercial premises.
- Council should explore the possibilities of council becoming a significant generator of electricity, including solar, wind, gas from waste management, perhaps mini hydro.
- Council needs to undertake an ongoing publicity campaign to develop our local region into a world-leading renewable energy centre of excellence.
There are potential benefits to council, to all residents, and to our energy security from increased renewable energy generation in the region.
In the "post-COVID world", there will be many new, exciting and innovative opportunities for industries, employment and economic activity.
It is vital that Bathurst is well placed to take advantage of these opportunities, and not be left behind.
All concerned locals should read the plan, and urge our council to be at the forefront of the necessary and inevitable changes that need to occur.
