Captains were assessed by umpires throughout the season, with not only their personal performances but their leadership skills taken into consideration.
Hope, who skippered Sydney University's second grade side, finished on 8.47 to narrowly miss out on taking the top honour. It went to Eastern Suburbs' Sam Mullens on 8.50.
It was a tough season for Sydney Uni as it finished in 14th with three wins, a washout, three draws and eight defeats through 15 rounds.
However, as evidenced by Hope ranking second in the captain of the year award, he still had a solid season.
Batting in the main in the middle order, Hope scored 389 runs for the season at an average of 25.9.
His best knock was a 97 against St George, his 161 minutes at the crease featuring 11 boundaries and three sixes. Hope has now scored more than 2,000 since making his NSW Premier Cricket career debut in season 2013-14.
With his spin bowling Hope claimed 16 wickets for the season at an average of 25.4 and he had the handy economy rate of 2.8.
His best performance was a 5-38 off 20 overs versus Northern District. It was just the second time in his NSW Premier Cricket career that he'd taken a five-wicket haul.
The other - a 5-15- came in season 2015-16.
