A well-known local historian and a former general manager of the Jenolan Caves Reserve Trust, Mr Fletcher was appointed to the role by state minister for Agriculture and Western NSW, Adam Marshall.
Mr Fletcher said he hopes to follow on from the work of the showground's previous board to ensure the venue's in good stead for the future.
"Most of the buildings on this premises are over a century old and while things are quiet, we have ample time to investigate their structural quality and prioritise maintenance works," he said.
"I'm looking forward to working with Christine [Curry, Bathurst Showground Land Manager secretary manager] and stakeholders to ensure the venue moves ahead on an upward trajectory."
Mr Fletcher said the showground is a vital tourist asset to the Bathurst region, and has identified a number of key areas to help enhance the venue's potential.
"The camping facilities here are far larger than I thought, and there's a real opportunity to highlight this in order to raise the venue's tourism profile," he said.
"We need to focus on generating revenue through grant funding and tourism to ensure these buildings can be protected and maintained for future members of the community to enjoy.
"It's important for us to get this venue back on track post-COVID, as it plays an essential role in hosting large community gatherings."
State member for Bathurst Paul Toole said Mr Fletcher's experience in governance and financial management was a key factor in his appointment.
"He's a long-standing citizen who understands the showground's role in providing an accessible community space," Mr Toole said.
