On Sunday morning Supercars unveiled a draft calendar which included the Bathurst 1000 on October 8-11 and a season finale at Mount Panorama next year on February 5-7.

Though this calendar is provisional and dependent on the status of the coronavirus, Cr Bourke, said it was "huge news for the city", and a chance to push for dual hosting rites into the future.

"It's fantastic that the final Supercars event will be held at the mecca of racing, this should be happening every year.

"Once people see how good it is to have the final event at Mount Panorama, I think it really could be a possibility to do it again in the future."

While conceding COVID-19 puts all final planning up in the air, Cr Bourke said the fact Supercars have set a date is a start.

"There's still horses going around Randwick Racecourse... I think they (the government) have to push the barriers a little and look at regional NSW. If we try and fail, so be it, but if we don't try we won't know. There's a lot of businesses really hurting out here, and this announcement is great news for all of them.

"Car racing brings $60 million into our local economy every year, and if car racing isn't here that money all adds up.

"This announcement it's something good, it's still early days, but it shows Supercars is serious," he said.

"Supercars and Bathurst Regional Council work very well together, and I really think once people see how good this is going to be, it's something we can do again in the future."

Bathurst Business Chamber President, Catherine Fitzsimons said from a chamber perspective Sunday's announcement was great news, and shows there was confidence for a major sporting event to go ahead in a regional area, in the current climate.

"It's fantastic news for Bathurst. Of course there is the caveat everything is subject to COVID-19, and we're yet to see how that plays out with the NSW Government and what's permitted as far as camping and accommodation, but it's still fantastic."

She said it was an opportunity for everyone to work together, and show as a region we're capable of keeping COVID -19 under control.

"Now more then ever it's vital we observe social distancing and other regulations so the city has the best chance to host the biggest number of people as possible at the event."
