He and brother Malcolm celebrated their first Group 1 victory on Wednesday night as their $81 outsider Terryrama stunned the field in the TAB Western Regional Championship Final (2,260 metres).
With no crowds at Bathurst Paceway, due to coronavirus restrictions, it helped the screams of joy from the sibling trainer-driver combination carry across the course as Terryrama stormed through the middle of the field for victory.
Terryrama shot past even longer hope Bettor Jiggle ($126, Nathan Turnbull) and race favourite Make Mine Memphis ($2.40, Bernie Hewitt) to complete a fairytale moment in the $100,000 race.
"It's our first Group 1. It's a really big thrill," Brett Hutchings said.
"He's got a load of ability but he's very tricky to drive. Thankfully tonight he put it all together."
Terryrama scraped into the final courtesy of being one of the two fastest runners-up across the eight heats held this month.
He entered the final with a record of two wins from 29 starts and career prizemoney of $22,000, but he exited race number 30 with more than three times that amount in the kitty.
"As they came into the straight I started to get a bit of a thrill because he can sprint. He was starting to wind up," Malcolm Hutchings said.
"I was still nervous at that point. Anything could still go wrong. He could break gear or he could do what he did - really hit the line.
"It was about 100 metres out where he started to hit his straps and loom up where I thought 'This is it. This is Group 1 glory'."
Brett Hutchings seized his opportunity to make a charge when Make Mine Memphis made a three wide move on the turn for home.
He found a trail behind the favourite, who quickly swallowed up front runner Catch A Moment, and Make Mine Memphis had found the lead before the straight.
Uncle Jord and Terryrama lined up to challenge the favourite, and Bettor Jiggle was further back but full of running.
Then the stunning moment happened.
Make Mine Memphis lost his lead to Terryrama and the margin only grew larger in the final strides.
Hutchings took a quick look over his shoulder, and when he saw Bettor Jiggle had too much ground to make up he began saluting with just under 50 metres remaining.
Terryrama won by 2.3m over the Josh Turnbull-trained Bettor Jiggle, who was impressive over the final quarter.
The quinella paid $316.
"We've persevered with him for a long time now. We used to drive him really tough but over the last few runs we've dropped him in and let him settle and dash home. Tonight he was just on tune," Malcolm Hutchings said.
"When they first announced this race it was when he was in top gear. It was for horses rated up to 70 ... and he came into the heats as a 56 so I thought my luck might have been out for getting a run, but he got one.
"He's got bad manners and in that first heat he galloped away and didn't make any ground. The following week it was just about getting around safely, and if he did that we knew he could be there towards the end."
