Things are looking bright for the Collegians Football Club in 2020 and not even the current coronavirus restrictions can stop the players from feeling positive about their future prospects.

The jump back into top grade is the biggest highlight for Collegians after several years building towards a possible return with positive second grade results.

They're one of five teams across the senior men's and women's competitions the club plans to field when play hopefully gets underway in the next few months.

Returning Collegians president Anthony Dunn said it's an exciting chance for the top team to test themselves at a new level.

"We're looking pretty good. We've picked up players from a few different places and had some juniors coming through. We were nominating a first grade team, which is the first time in a few years that we've done that," he said.

"We also nominated a second and fourth grade team in men's. We're one grade off filling out that competition, which is a goal for us over the next few years.

"We had a really strong second grade team last year but avail abilities towards the end and just missed finals. We've been really building with the younger guys in that side."

If there's one area the club has taken a hit in it's the women's second grade side, but Dunn has confidence they can bounce back over time.

"We were nominating second and third grade teams but unfortunately they've taken a hit with players, just with work and other circumstances changing," he said.

"But apart from that things are going really well. We've always had a strong base of juniors and we haven't had too many of them pull out."

Finances are an area where clubs are paying close attention.

In the case of Collegians it's another strong suit, and Dunn said that takes a lot of pressure of the club during what can be a challenging time.

"We're in a really good position. We're at the back of a lot of our sponsorship deals which means our costs are down but our sponsorship money is still coming through," he said.

But if there's one area Dunn is proudest of Collegians it's that strong junior base.

The club has prided itself on big numbers in that area and the president said that looks to continue in 2020.

"One of our main goals at the club is to focus on player development, bringing a pathway through the club for our juniors - and a first grade team gives them something big to aim for," he said.

"We've had a lot of successful junior programs. We have a group from Canberra coming up in July, Coerver Coaching, and we're hoping that it will still be able to go ahead.

"One thing we've done during isolation is supporting our players, and our physiotherapist partner PhysX has been putting together an app for us where we can submit our results and they create a tailored program."
