Here in Australia, devastating drought followed by unprecedented bushfires followed by international pandemic has seen us focus on what it takes to lead communities through hard times.
Celebrated Australian scientist and former Australian of the Year, Sir Gustav Nossal, describes community leadership as "the courage, creativity and capacity to inspire participation, development and sustainability for strong communities.
At Charles Sturt University, we believe good community leadership is so critical to our future that we went out, talked to our communities across regional NSW, and developed a tailor-made course to encourage, support and teach Community Leadership and Resilience.
The course is flexible and available in industry-aligned micro-subjects. It covers subjects such as communications strategy, personal resilience and negotiating and managing conflict.
At 3pm on Wednesday, May 27 we are holding a free webinar to share our experiences of working with communities to co-create our new Community Leadership course. We'll discuss what we learned and why it's increasingly important to understand the true value of community leadership.
It will be hosted by Charles Sturt panellists including Strategic Adviser for Regional Engagement and Government Relations Fiona Nash, Associate Professor Jenny Kent, and Amber Marks from our Strategic Engagement team.

Our annual EngFest (celebrating all things Engineering) Explorations Series Lecture on Tuesday, June 9 will be another opportunity to be inspired and learn from a leader when former Red Bull head of operations, Richard Hopkins presents his free Zoom webinar, Formula One - The Highs and Lows.
Mr Hopkins is currently a professor of practice at UNSW. Richard turned his boyhood dream into reality and became involved in Formula One at the age of 16 with the Brabham Formula One team. He was key a team member from 1987 until 1991.
In the early 1990s Mr Hopkins joined the world-renowned McLaren team. It was in this role that he started travelling the world on the Grand Prix circuit as a mechanic, where he experienced the taste of winning for the first time. His role at McLaren also had him working alongside drivers such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell.
In 2007, he was asked to join the Red Bull Formula One team and was given a very clear and simple mandate: "Make us into a team of winners".
Mr Hopkins took his depth of experience, dogged will to win and exceptional organisational skills to transform a team of more than 800 from competitors into winners and, ultimately, multiple world champions.
By the end of the 2015, he had been involved in 509 Grand Prix spanning 28 seasons and had been instrumental in the Red Bull Formula One Team's 50 Grand Prix victories and now 169 trophies.
Professor Hopkins will draw upon his experiences to talk about creating a high performing team focused on technical and operational success, and managing a high performing business through success, failure, adversity and tragedy.
