The stunning grey was a winner of over $250,000 in prizemoney for the Turnbull and he would go on to enjoy a successful show career following his time on the race circuit for Judy Frisby.
'Dex' found his crowning achievement as a six-year-old with victory in the 2014 Group 2 Mildura Cup for trainer Steve Turnbull with Amanda Turnbull in the drivers' seat.
Among the grey's other successes were the Young Cherry Festival Cup, Dubbo City Cup, the Banjo Patterson Cup at Orange and the Allan Harpley Memorial in Junee.
Steve Turnbull said Im Blue Double Dee had the loveliest demeanour a trainer could have asked for.
"He was such a lovely animal and the quietest stallion you've ever seen. If you led him in own to the stabling area at the trots he'd carry on but you could lead him in with a mare and he wouldn't take any notice.
"Little Ava [Turnbull] could do anything with him. She could do anything with him. She'd be crawling through his back legs and he just wouldn't worry about it.
"He really started Amanda and Jenny off. With the money he won it helped them buy a lot more horses, and it all went from there.
"They did little letters to put in the grave with him. It was a pretty heavy day for everyone."
He finished with 27 wins and 47 placings across a successful career.
Following his 163rd and final career start Amanda Turnbull put the call out to see if anyone would like to have the pacer as a show or pleasure horse.
Frisby answered that call.
Under her care Im Blue Double Dee became a grand champion at the NSW Standardbred Pleasure and Performance Horse Association (SPPHA) State Championships, and a much valued part of Frisby's life.
Following his grand champion success in 2018 Frisby said there was always "an overall presence about him that everyone likes."
That rare, measured temperament is something the Bathurst pacing community will miss dearly.
