As many as 10,000 South Australian tenants suffering financial hardship caused by the coronavirus pandemic could apply for rent relief under a new state government scheme.

Successful applicants will receive a $1000 grant that will be passed on to their landlords.
Tenants who are receiving JobKeeper or JobSeeker payments, have less than $5000 in savings and are paying more than 30 per cent of their income in rent are eligible to apply.
Treasurer Rob Lucas said the grants were part of the state government's $1 billion economic stimulus package.
"We know many South Australians are doing it incredibly tough at the moment," Mr Lucas said.
"These $1000 grants will encourage landlords to support tenants across the state to keep their head above water during this challenging time."
In order for grants to be approved, Mr Lucas said landlords and tenants must demonstrate that revised rental terms have been agreed.
"The rent relief grant will be adjusted to reflect the value of the rent relief provided to an eligible tenant where it is less than $1000,"
Grant applications will open in the next few weeks and will close on September 30.
