COVID-19 restrictions forced the health district to rethink the way it supported new mothers across the region and there has been a good response to the online sessions.
"New parents groups (NPGs) are normally provided face to face in centres across the Western NSW Local Health District," consultant child and family health clinical nurse Anne Roth said.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
"We've had a great response to the first group with 52 first-time parents registering since it started on April 22.
"These parents live in centres across the district including Orange, Bathurst, Mudgee, Dubbo, Trangie, Canowindra, Narromine and Nyngan."
Ms Roth said the groups provide new parents with access to other new parents, with child and family health nurses acting as facilitators.
"This is particularly important for new parents who can feel vulnerable at this time," she said.
"It may be hard right now for them to know how to balance the joy and excitement of having a new baby with the fear caused by this unprecedented global pandemic."
The groups are held weekly over four weeks with each session running for 90 minutes.
Topics covered include sleep and settling, play and tummy time, baby massage, adjusting to parenthood and normal development.
For more information, or to join the group, phone Ms Roth on 6369 8082 or 0429 320 328 (Monday to Friday), or or child and family health clinical nurse specialist Meagan Evans on 0436 810 617 (Wednesdays).
