Lisa Worthy's Barney's Sure ($15) had been cut off from the lead midway through the race but surged home along the rail when the runners in front became tangled up on the bend.
Barney's Sure won by 2.25 lengths ahead of Good Friend ($5.50, Lindsay Joyce), who was a length clear of third placed favourite Valentine Man ($2.10, Lynn Maney).
"It's been hard getting runs with the age he is now but this was a masters race and well suited for him. He's run well today, not in the fastest time but they don't pay you for the time, do they?" Worthy laughed.
"It's very satisfying to him win like that and it's always good to know these old fellas can still win a race."
Barney's Sure, Valentine Man and Good Friend all approached the turn lined up together, which meant something was going to have to give.
That ended up being Barney's Sure.
Worthy's runner was squeezed out of the lead battle and Clare Fallon raced up to relegate him back to fourth.
But Clare Fallon's arrival on the scene would disrupt the runs of Valentine Man and Good Friend, giving Barney's Sure the comeback opportunity.
As the leading trio drifted wide Barney's Sure pounced along the rail to run clear and win in a time of 18.35.
Good Friend was almost running off the outside of the track but held steady to run second.
