I would argue that a large majority of Bathurst residents are indeed motorsport enthusiasts and are excited to have a grassroots entry into the sport available to them.
This facility is as much in keeping with their wishes as the rugby and league grounds and BMX tracks previously built by Bathurst Regional Council.
The site is situated between a no less noisy motorcross track and the tip on the southern side of the Mount.
Neither of these sites have had any Indigenous claims put forward against them.
And while I'm not arguing that the Wiradyuri women may or may not have a claim over this land, in their original complaint to council there was the open offer that a percentage of gate takings would smooth the way for the track to be built.
Forgive me for being a little sceptical.
As for the sustainability of the sport, there are already electric karts raced throughout the world.
Motorsport has contributed largely towards the development of many fuel-efficient devices such as turbos, hybrid engines and now the E series formula. To say it lacks sustainability is a little naive.
Is this a sport? I'd challenge anyone to do 20 laps of a kart track and get out with a heart rate below 160bpm.
And as for the the smelly exhaust fumes, I agree that the smell of daffodils is a delight, but I love the smell of two stroke-in the morning.
