The countries were named joint hosts of the 2023 event by FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the early hours of Friday morning, local time.

The announcement sparked celebrations among football fans but also left local communities asking how they might contribute to the event.

Thirty-two teams will contest the World Cup finals with matches to be played in 12 cities across the two countries.

While Bathurst cannot hope to host any games here, mayor Bobby Bourke said he would like council to investigate the possibility of hosting a team for training sessions at either Carrington Park or the redeveloped Proctor Park.

"We've shown we can do it here in Bathurst and I will be pushing hard for the the staff and directors to start looking at it now," he said.

"We have spent a lot of money on Proctor Park and we have a great facility at Carrington Park, and we should be trying to utilise them whenever we can."

Cr Bourke said Bathurst's success in hosting world championship BMX and skateboarding events, and its selection to host the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in March next year, proved the quality of the region's sporting assets.

"We need to put together a proposal about what we have here to offer and go from there," he said.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said winning the hosting rights was a massive coup for NSW.

"We are ecstatic to be welcoming the world's best female footballers to NSW in 2023 for this historic tournament, which will deliver enormous cultural, social and economic benefits to our state for decades to come," Ms Berejiklian said.

"After what has been an unprecedented year so far, today's announcement is a major morale boost - giving not only sporting fans but the wider NSW community something to look forward to ... while creating plenty of new jobs and opportunities."
