But Josh Turnbull sees potential in his young Roll With Joe gelding.
Roll With Holmes, the first foal to race out of Holmesdale, will make his debut for the stable with Steve Turnbull the gig for this Wednesday night's Lexus of Dubbo 3YO Pace (1,730 metres).
Bred and owned by family and friends, Turnbull said Roll With Holmes still has plenty to learn as he prepares to enter the racing game.
"He does do a bit wrong, and that's why dad's driving him because he can be a bit difficult to handle," he said.
"He's got the ability but doesn't have the manners yet so we're just hoping he gets around safely doing everything right."
Roll With Holmes has three trials to his name, with no finish better than fourth in any of those, but kept a cool head to qualify for racing last week.
Turnbull said it's been a tricky endeavour getting his runner to the track but hopes the effort will be worthwhile.
"We bred him ourselves. We raced his mother Holmesdale, who is a lovely little mare, and being by Roll With Joe he's bred alright, he's just been a headache of a horse," he said.
"We're hoping he can mature after a couple of runs."
Turnbull has three other runners in action across the home meeting.
Filly Warra Downs takes on the older crowd in the Central West Plumbing and Gasfitting Pace (1,730 metres) looking to add to the win she picked up on debut.
"Warra Downs is a nice two-year-old filly but she's up against the older horses and dad has Drive To The Beach drawn on the inside and will be hard to beat," Turnbull said.
"Hit The Track used to be a lovely honest old horse who hasn't been in the same form he once had. He's starting to get back to where he used to be.
"Ned [Itsallaboutned] has drawn the back row and he'll need a bit of luck but he's been running honest for me."
Bathurst Paceway's eight race meeting gets underway with the Lion Nathan Pace (1,730m) at 5.22pm.
