The recent clamour for a statue and a park to be created for a past Aboriginal warrior is, in my view, somewhat misplaced.
Nowhere have I read about who will be asked to pay the costs of any firm proposal. I can guess.
In the past, war memorials in the form of monuments, halls, park rotunda, etc, were largely paid for by a benefactor(s) leading the way with a generous donation, followed by public events to raise the money to pay for the costs.
I haven't read of such events by the proponents in this case.
My observations are that in recent years there have been very few built memorials.
Who knows, if a memorial is erected who is to say it won't be desecrated or damaged by someone or a group who opposes the individual remembered?
If, as we are told, recognition needs to be made of one prominent indigenous leader, a beneficial way would be to endow money raised in the form of education scholarships to help meet the costs of high school, technical, rather than a lump of concrete or tangled metal which would be more use to pigeons and the odd meaningless glance from a tourist.
First step? Let's see the colour of the proponents' money and go from there.
