Bathurst has been included in the 16 Cities Program under the NSW Future Transport 2056 Plan with the goal of increasing bus usage from a current level of about three per cent to an ambitious 17 per cent.
A report to councillors by Bathurst Regional Council environmental, planning and building services director Neil Southorn says Transport for NSW has started delivering the program in Bathurst and consultation with stakeholders, including council and the local bus company, is under way.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
The 2056 Plan does not encompass inter-city services (such as Bathurst to Orange), nor new connections between Bathurst and surrounding villages.
Instead, it concentrates on boosting bus usage in and around the city.
"The program will consider key priority improvements that can be delivered quickly," Mr Southorn's report states.
"For Bathurst this is likely to include minor service improvements such as the extension of hours of bus services, particularly on Saturdays, and connections of bus services to the Bathurst Bullet rail service.
"These key priority improvements are likely to be delivered within the next few months."
Mr Southorn said there would be a "holistic service plan" for the delivery of bus services in Bathurst.
"[It] will include a major network review with the aim to improve transport efficiency and enhance opportunities for hub and spoke transport provision," the report states.
"This would include new or upgraded supporting public transport infrastructure such as bus interchanges within the CBD and at neighbourhood activity centres, bus signage and bus information and alternative ways of delivering bus services within the city.
"... It is anticipated that the service delivery plan for Bathurst will be delivered within the next 12 months."
