West of Town, featuring childhood friends George Sargent and Ben Rudgley, released 'Left My Side' last week, which came together through an opportune burst in creativity.
"We came up with the song in the space of two hours, including editing and recording," Sargent said.
"I wrote the piano piece the day before and quickly got in touch with George and said "mate, I've got something here, let's meet tomorrow and record this"," Rudgley added.
Rudgley wrote the piano and guitar parts while Sargent provided vocals, and the pair co-wrote the lyrics.
"The song deals with the subject of loss, and is open to interpretation for everyone who has experienced grief at some point in their life," Sargent said.
"It leans towards a break-up song, but it doesn't quite get there."
The song blends Rudgley's Coldplay-inspired sonics and depth with Sargent's confident croon, which takes cues from the techniques of Sir Elton John and Billy Joel.
Sargent and Rudgley named their duo West of Town to acknowledge their formative years in Windradyne [west of Bathurst], where they first became friends.
"Ben and I grew up in Windradyne as kids, and we went through preschool, primary school and early high school together living in that same area," Sargent said.
"There's a video of us as young kids squeakily singing in the garage, which is kind of how we started playing music together," Rudgley added.
The pair are working towards an album's worth of material by the end of the year, and will support Sydney band The Soul Movers [featuring former Wiggle Murray Cook] at their Gunnedah and Tamworth shows in September.
'Left My Side' is available on all streaming platforms [iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify] and for more information, visit the West of Town Facebook page.
