SPEARHEADING an attack - it is something Joey Bugg is known for doing when it comes to the Cowra Magpies in Group 10, but his skills extend beyond rugby league.
Bugg is also a talented touch football player and it is his name which goes down as the leading try-scorer from the Bathurst Touch Football Association's inaugural men's premier league competition.
Bugg and the BSC Bandits were the winners of the major men's premier league awards, while in the first edition of the mixed premier league competition, The Fijians came from third spot on the ladder to take an upset win over Body FX.
The new competitions, completed before COVID-19 forced almost all sporting codes into lockdown, were a success and Bathurst Touch Football co-ordinator Tony Lewis said the initiative looks here to stay.
It will no doubt be discussed at next week's annual general meeting.
"It's something we are looking at keeping to help keep lifting the overall standard, it's well worth doing. We had very competitive sides, it attracted some good touch football," Lewis said.
"We made sure that we had the best available referees on those games and we also had a leading try scorer award - that was a first-off, we'd never done that before.
"It gave a little more impetus for them to come out and try hard and we used that in both competitions. Joe Bugg won the men's award.
"The premier league competitions also attracted sponsors who wanted to get involved and help promote the sport, so thanks to Bathurst RSL and the Panorama Hotel. It meant their trophies were also a bit more than the run of the mill ones."
As well as discussing the return of those two premier league competitions, Lewis said a women's premier could be a possibility for next season.
"Women, we could probably make a premier league for them, that could be an option," he said. "At stages we've had anywhere as low as four women's teams and then up to 12, but that is something we will look at."
The AGM will be held on August 5 at the Bathurst Touch Football clubhouse at Kelso from 6pm. A new secretary is also being sought.
