LiveBetter CEO Natalie Forsyth-Stock said many of these people find themselves in aged care facilities.
"That's really not the ideal environment," she said.
Ms Forsyth-Stock said there are many factors that contribute to young people with a disability ending up in aged care homes, including delays to applications and cost.
MAKING NEWS:
"There's something called supportive independent living (SIL) which is basically a service which means people can live independently but supported. It's pretty hard to get a SIL package though," she said.
"There's just long delays and for anything under the NDIS, it just takes time. For a start, you've got to understand if you're eligible, you've got to go through a planner to get a plan and then you've got to get it.
"It can take years to get a SIL package but that would be a really extreme case. It's more going through the whole planning process and wondering if you're eligible and not everyone is eligible. That's just the reality.
"In some circumstances they can push it through quicker than that.
"When you look at the numbers and you've got 6000 people in residential aged care, that's going to take a while to clear that backlog."
While a SIL package can be a game changer for some, it doesn't cover costs for rent or food.
"Fortunately in the Central West, we have lower rent, so it's easier for people to afford to pay rent et cetera from the disability support pension," she said.
A trend that is facing some people with a disability is that their carers are ageing.
"Historically, people may have a child with Down's syndrome, something like that, and they've quite happy at home," she said.
"As their parents have aged, it's become much more of a burden for their parents."
Ms Forsyth-Stock said LiveBetter can help when it comes to support.
"When people already have their package we help them find providers et cetera," she said.
"We can certainly, if someone calls us, help them understand and navigate the system in terms of how you go about doing it."
