It was only a month ago the Dubbo side was at the foot of the ladder with just a solitary point to its name but Saturday's strong 3-1 win over the high-flying Lithgow means Spurs are now just one point off fourth place.

"I feel it was our best performance of the season," Spurs centre-back David Ferguson said.

"We held our own and we did switch off a little in the second half and they came out and scored straight away.

"I thought we might be in for a long half then but we got back and held possession well."

That maintaining of possession has been key to the side's recent success.

Spurs scored just three goals in the first five weeks of the competition while conceding 10.

Ferguson said a sense of panic in the side in those early rounds hampered the side's progress but recent weeks possession has been maintained and players have been enjoying themselves.

"We came into the league with a pretty fresh team and not many had played together before and I think we took it a little too seriously," he said.

"We'd panic a bit and just boot the ball but we've relaxed a little bit and enjoying ourselves and we're playing better."

The big challenge now is to maintain that form.

Spurs at home again next weekend against the winless Parkes United and a victory, combined with results going their way, could result in Spurs rising to as high as third.

"It's really important we don't drop off," he said.

"We've got to try and secure a top four spot in the new couple of weeks."

Spurs head into the meeting with Parkes, who they drew 1-all with in the first round of the season, with plenty of confidence and form.

Nine goals have been scored in the past three weeks, with three of those coming against a Lithgow side which had lost just once this year prior to Saturday.

Angus Cusack was strong up front and scored two goals but also impressed with his hold-up play and ability to bring others into the game while Les Usher also chimed in during the win.

"That's where we'd been lacking at the start of the season," Ferguson added.

"We'd get down there but weren't shooting enough but now we're starting to shoot more and that keeps the keeper thinking and we've put a few of them away."

Cusack was one standout for Spurs on Saturday but Ferguson also singled out the efforts of his fellow defender Josh Allen and keeper Bailey Delaney.

"He [Allen] is starting to own his position at the back and he's been playing really well. I can't fault him at all this season," the experienced defender said.

"And Bailey Delaney. He had a cracking game and just saved about everything that came at him. It was unlucky to let one in but apart from that he was outstanding."

Spurs is at home again next weekend and will meet Parkes, having scored a draw in the first meeting between the two sides this season.
