The A Pairs final was played between Phil Gray and John Archer against Tony Stokes and Ray Fitzalan. The B Pairs was played by Mick and Susie Simmons against Nev Townsend and Ian Shaw.
Rain was threatening and play was delayed for 30 minutes before heading out to a damp green. Phil and John had an early start, leading 11-2 by the fifth end. By the 10th end this lead had stretched to 18-3, but Tony and Ray fought back to win the next four ends. Phil and John continued on, to close out the game 23-14.
In the B Pairs, Mick and Susie took a commanding lead of 15-1 by the sixth end. Nev and Ian fought back to trail 19-10 by the 15th end. The game was called at 18 ends with the score 26-10.
Congratulations to the winners and all finalists. It was particularly pleasing to see new members Ian, Mick and Susie in the finals.
Wednesday social bowls
IT was a clear, sunny but breezy day with quick greens that saw quite a few bowls in the ditch.
Game one: Ian Cunningham and Pat Duff won a close game over Jack Smith and Paul Rodenhuis 17-15. Jack and Paul had a good start, leading 11-1 after eight ends, but Pat and Ian worked steadily to draw even 13-all on the 15th end before winning the game 17-15.
Game two: Barry McPherson and Dennis Harvey played Ray Noonan and Hamish McKay, returning after a long absence. Barry and Dennis lead early and although scores were level 14-all on the 13th end, they kept the upper hand to win 21-15.
Game three: Ron Cambey and Arch Ledger took on Denis Oxley and Susie Simmons. Ron and Arch held the lead at the 11th end, 8-12. Despite winning a couple of fours, Denis and Susie fell short, losing 18-20.
Game four: Peter Buining and Ian Scofield played John Finlay and Ian Shaw. Peter and Ian opened strongly, winning the first six ends. They continued as they began, winning 22-10.
Game five: Bob Lindsay who is recently returned from holiday, Phil Murray and Kevin Miller played against Geoff Thorne, Joe Young and Bob Heffernan. Although scores were close at times, Bob, Phil and Kevin were never headed, running out the winners 21-13.
Saturday bowls
Game one: Denis Oxley, Paul Reece and Paul Rodenhuis took on Denis Harvey, John Fulton and Anthony Morrisey. It was tight game, with neither side dominating, scores were equal at 14-all on the 16th and 15-all on the 18th ends. The final result was a draw.
Game two: Garry Hotham and Kevin Miller played Ray Noonan and Bob Lindsay. An even game, the score stood at 11-all on the 11th end. Shorty and Bob led on the 17th but a three from Garry and Kevin gave them the win, 17-16.
Game three: Ian Schofield and Arch Ledger lined up against Alex Birkens and Arthur Williams. After six ends, Alex and Arthur led 12-3 and they still led 13-10 on the 11th end. Scoey and Arch then got the bit between their teeth and dropped only one end on the next seven, including a six on the 15th. The final score: 27-14.
Game four: Mick Sewell and Phil Murray faced Alby Homer and Darryl Geale. Mick and Phil marched to a strong lead, winning the first eight ends and 17 shots. Alby and Darryl won seven of the remaining 10 ends, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. The final score was 21-13.
MAJELLAN
TUESDAY afternoon saw 20 bowlers take to the green on a sunny winter's afternoon, and some big wins were recorded.
Game one: Terry Chifley, Peter Ryan and Peter Zylstra were no match for Ron Hogan, Mick Burke and Noel Whitney after losing eight of the first nine ends and trailing 12-1.
Whitney kept the pressure on throughout the game, only losing four ends overall and recording a big 32-6 victory.
Game two: It was a close match between Des Sanders and Alan Clark up against John Bosson and Peter Drew and it was not decided until the last end.
It was an even game through 12 ends with Clark holding a narrow one-shot lead. Clark then put themselves in a strong position by going out to a seven-shot advantage. However, Drew came back strongly to win six of the last seven ends and got over the line with two shots on the last end to score a 23-19 win.
Game three: Ian Warren and Gordon Death were leading comfortably against Jim Clark and Nev Kable at the halfway point of their match with a seven-shot lead.
Kable then scored 10 shots over the next three ends to take the lead, but this was short lived. Death found their form to win all but one of the remaining ends of the game to win 22-16.
Game four: It took four ends for Chris Woodyatt, George Ballard and Ron McGarry to get on the scoreboard against Tom Beck, Terry Clark and Kevin Howard. This was as good as it got for the McGarry team as they dropped six shots on the very next end, and this set the tone for the rest of the match. Howard was dominant throughout the whole game and recorded the second big win on the day with a 37-12 victory.
Sunday bowls
THERE were no games played Saturday due to the inclement weather, but two championship matches were completed Sunday afternoon before the rain returned.
In a semi-final of the A pairs, Mick McDonald and Peter Naylor took on Hugh Brennan and Tim Pickstone in very difficult conditions.
Despite the conditions, this game produced high quality bowls by all players. Naylor got off to a strong start by scoring a four on the first end and McDonald, playing lead, kept the pressure on with good lead bowls.
Whilst also having bowls in the head and the Pickstone pairing holding shot on many ends prior to the last one or two bowls, Naylor was able to come in with his final bowls to take the end off them. The final score was 32-10 in favour of Naylor, but was not reflective of the overall standard of bowls by all players.
The second championship game was a B pairs game between Jim Clark and Peter Zylstra against Greg Quartly-Scott and Ron McGarry.
This was an even contest between these four bowlers with scores level at 10 all after nine ends. The McGarry pairing had the best of the next nine ends to push out to a 21-15 lead at the end of 18. Zylstra got themselves back into the match by scoring a three on the next end, and were holding three shots with McGarry to play his last bowl.
This was his best bowl of the day as he moved the jack enough to score three shots and virtually put the match beyond Zylstra. The final score was 26-18 in favour of McGarry.
Weather permitting, there will be the second semi-final in the A pairs played this weekend between Rhys Harvey and Craig Bush versus Paul Francis and Craig Townsend.
There will also be the semi-finals in the B Pairs with Des Sanders and Trevor Sharpham versus Greg Quartly-Scott and Ron McGarry and the second match will feature Hugh Brennan and Scott Chapman versus John Bosson and Kevin Howard.
