Its Australian arm aims to start a huge new coal mine, the Carmichael mine, in Queensland.
Proponents say it will create jobs and improve living conditions by providing coal-fired power for the Indian sub-continent.
There is widespread opposition to this new mine. Primarily, the organisation Stop Adani, along with GetUp, 350.org, and many other groups say that this mine will contribute to climate change when we should be trying to reduce our emissions.
OTHER RECENT ECO NEWS COLUMNS:
Have the proponents got their facts right?
The coal is to be used in an Adani power station in Godda, India.
However, the entire output will be sold to Bangladesh, and not benefit any local people, who have been forced to relinquish their lands, and subjected to ongoing violent harassment when they have protested.
Gautam Adani is close to Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, and many normal safeguard processes appear to have been bypassed.
Adani's mine in Queensland has received considerable state and federal government support. However, the opposition of the native Wangan-Jagalingou people has been over-ridden and the approvals Adani says it has received are from non-representative groups.
Adani has promised up to 10,000 jobs, but estimates are that only around 1500 jobs would actually be created.
Adani's Abbot Point coal terminal in Queensland has had two environmental breaches, releasing coal-contaminated water into the Great Barrier Reef, and into the adjacent Caley Valley wetlands.
Adani has also been cited for numerous environmental breaches in India, some of which it has failed to clean up after more than five years.
Adani's overall environmental and human rights records are poor.
The output of the Adani mine would contribute considerably to global temperature rise, and hence to more coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef.
More shipping traffic through the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park would increase the chances of an ecological disaster were a ship to be grounded or wrecked - probably a case of when rather than if.
To Adani's credit, it is heavily involved with solar power renewable energy.
It should be concentrating on this business rather than promoting coal-fired power.
Australia should be aiming for no new coal mines and the phasing out of existing mines as renewable energy contributes more.
Promoting huge new coal mines run by companies with dubious environmental and human rights records verges on the criminal. Yes, we should Stop Adani.
