Thorburn's song '6422' was selected as one of 20 finalists in Tones and I's 'That One Song' competition, with $5000 and a full day of recording in a professional studio up for grabs.
"It feels unreal, it's a massive opportunity I'm really grateful for," Thorburn said.
"There's been thousands of submissions worldwide, and it's absolutely surreal that mine has made the cut."
The competition is being funded out of Tones and I's own pocket, and the winner will also receive a Zoom meeting with Tones, Lemon Tree Music and Artists Only music services agency.
Thorburn said '6422', from his debut EP Lost My Mind, reflects the anxiety around the sudden end to relations with a romantic interest.
"It's one of the catchier tunes I've written, and was inspired by a girl I was infatuated with who suddenly ceases communication with me, and '6422' stands for the six days, four hours and 22 minutes it had been since I spoke to her," he said.
Thorburn will drop a new song, 'Give Me a Sign', this Friday with friend and former Kings Hotel workmate, Miranda Rogers.
