The garden beckons, and outside exercise again becomes a pleasure.
As a regular cyclist, the sight of increasing numbers of people cycling in Bathurst, from the very young to the retired, is welcome.
Cycling is a wonderful workout that provides physical and mental health and financial benefits, as well as benefiting the local community and our planet.
OTHER RECENT ECO NEWS COLUMNS:
Health benefits are many: weight loss, metabolic/diabetic control, blood pressure, improved posture/balance, muscle strength, reduced risk of cancer, and improved outcomes for those with cancer.
Mental health benefits of regular exercise such as cycling are well proven, with the release of endorphins, and hormones such as serotonin. Sense of well-being is improved, depression reduced, energy levels, sleep patterns, creative thinking and memory are improved.
Social benefits include increased contacts with family, neighbours and community, and reduced car traffic with calmer, safer roads.
In terms of economic benefits, on average it costs $6000 to $8000 a year to own and operate a motor vehicle, but only $150 for a bike. Walking or cycling saves money, but also provides some or all of much needed daily exercise. Motor vehicles cause much more wear and tear on roads.
Environmental benefits are many: greatly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced air pollutants, reduced noise pollution and traffic congestion, reduced need for parking lots and roadways.
Most activities in life pose some risks, particularly riding a bike.
Risks can be reduced by getting good advice from experienced cyclists, being very aware of road rules, being highly visible with lights and clothing, and choosing safer cycle routes.
