Orange has already cancelled its NYE celebration, including the fireworks display, with organisers citing difficulty attracting sponsors as uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and public gatherings continues.

But Cr Bourke says it is too early for Bathurst to go down the same path and he believes the community will be crying out for the chance to come together at the end of a difficult year.

Also working in Bathurst's favour is the fact council has set aside $60,000 for an NYE party in its 2020-21 budget, meaning the event does not have to rely on sponsorship to go ahead.

"A lot of little things are starting to happen again and we're starting to see some events to look forward to," Cr Bourke said. "We can't be shut up forever.

"Nothing about the fireworks has come to council yet but I think it's still a wait and see for the moment, it's too early to make a call either way.

"But I'd like to think if there are no bushfires around and COVID remains under control across our area, then the fireworks should be able to go ahead.

"We've got plenty of space there at the adventure playground for people to spread out and enjoy themselves so we should be making the most of it."

Cr Bourke said the next month or so should provide extra clarity for the community.

"I think once we get through October things are going to look a little clearer," he said.

"If there are no outbreaks then people will keep getting a little bit more confident about going out.

"It was very disappointing that we had to cancel last year's fireworks but as long as we comply with COVID-safe measures, I'm hoping we can go ahead this year."

Cr Bourke said plans were also under way to revamp local Australia Day celebrations in 2021.

He said he would like to see the community come together for outdoor celebrations in Peace Park rather than a repeat of the indoor ceremonies that have been held inside Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre in recent years.
