The Gold boys looked ready to cruise home to a 3-0 win with three minutes to go but a CSU penalty goal and quick follow up effort led to a tense conclusion.
But the match only lasted a few more seconds from the kick-off and Abercrombie celebrated another crucial win, building on the success they had against their AFC Navy clubmates a week earlier.
"We're really coming along strong in this second half of the season. CSU are a really good team so we knew they would put it to us," Gold captain Patrick O'Connor said.
"Like it's been all season, the area for us to improve in is our fitness. The second half takes its toll on us. It shows in every game. At 3-0 we thought we had it in the bag."
Neither side were short on chances at the start of the game but it was CSU who got off to the stronger start, quickly finding several corners to put AFC under the pump.
The score was still somehow nil-all after AFC's Alexis Le Masson put a firm shot into the crossbar and CSU's Jack Saran put an effort just over the top just moments later.
The breakthrough came 16 minutes into the game when Nick Ioannides was on clean up duty on a corner, sliding into the ball to deliver a strike into the top of the net.
CSU had chances to hit back before the break through Brendon Mandizvidza and Kynan Lane but their shots sailed high.
The Stags started strongly in the second half with a couple of threatening corners but the Gold squad would still extend the lead in the 52nd minute when Tim Wilson hit the target from close range.

With 20 minutes remaining Gold's Stefan Scott crushed the goal of the day from just past the halfway line, catching Josh Wilcox only slightly off his line but placing the shot with precision.
CSU got Abercrombie's pulses racing late in the match.
A foul in the box allowed Mandizvidza to put a penalty kick under a diving Ash Jones before Harry Isaacs got the Stags within a goal inside the last minute of play.
But the match would only last a couple more seconds from the kick-off as the Abercrombie men survived the late scare.
Meanwhile, in other A grade results, Abercrombie FC Navy thumped Lithgow Workmens FC 5-0 and Collegians FC bested Panorama FC Red 4-2.
Western NSW FC's under 15s and 16s gave would-be bye team Panorama FC Black some match time on Sunday, with the representative squad winning 7-1.
Abercrombie Navy and Collegians continue to share first place on the ladder with 24 points, with the former having the edge on goal difference.
Victory for Gold has taken them to 17 points in third, ahead of PFC Red (14).
