The Gemma Hewitt-trained runner has shown glimpses of promise in the three starts she's had since coming across from New Zealand but her mixed bag of mannerisms have gotten in the way of her realising her potential.

She got off to a great start by finishing second in her Australian debut before going one place better in the next run.

However, a horror gallop while leading in her third race had the stable looking for answers to make sure she didn't falter again.

Hewitt said it's been quite the journey getting the American Ideal mare ready to race again.

"She's a bit of a handful, this horse, but we've taken a bit of time out with her name and we feel like we've got her sorted out. She's taken a while but she seems to be doing things right at the moment," she said.

"It's mainly in her gait and her manners. They were getting a bit out of control. She seems to have sorted a bit of that out and she's had a nice freshen up."

Her recent trials are more than encouraging for Hewitt.

She picked up two straight trial wins, the most recent of which came in a mile rate of 1:57.1 - nearly a second quicker than the time she picked up her Australian win.

"Those trials were good. We did a lot of changing her gear with those three runs. We seem to be happy with where she's at right now," Hewitt said.

"In her last run before the spell she galloped when she was out in front of them all. I think she got tired after going hard early and knocked herself up, but she never needs much of an excuse to do things wrong.

"That night was pretty shattering."

Cowgirls N Angels will likely jostle for favouritism with Mat Rue's filly Blue Ivy, who's won two of her three starts this preparation.

Hewitt will also have the biggest drive yet of her brand new driving career this Wednesday night.

She has the drive on Make Mine Heaven in The Knickerbocker Hotel Pace (1,730m) where the mare will make her return from a brief spell.

The Group 3 winner will likely start a heavy favourite, especially after her sharp win in a high quality trial.

"I'm really grateful to dad for giving me a drive on her," Hewitt said.

"She's probably the best horse in the stable at the moment. I've been fortunate to drive her in a few trials so I'm looking forward to driving her at the races.

"She's a bit of a class above this field and has been competing at Menangle week in, week out so I'm looking forward to driving her here."

The eight-race meeting at Bathurst Paceway starts from 5.42pm.
