CSU will come away with the wooden spoon if they fall to the competition leaders at University Oval this weekend, a prize the Bathurst club will play to avoid during family day celebrations.

That's going to be a tough ask for a team down massively on numbers and against a Mudgee side playing for direct passage through to the grand final.

But stranger things have happened.

CSU coach Peter Plunkett said the team are once again under no illusions about how hard the challenge will be.

"We've still go a lot of injuries. We do get the return of Marcus Burrell into the front row and we do get Lachie Melville making a return into the front row at hooker," he said.

"They'll beef us up in the forwards. We have the return of a couple of centres as well so hopefully that will let us put in a more competitive performance this week. We're looking forward to the challenge of it."

That's the main aim for this last game - make the Wombats earn their points.

The Bathurst side will at least be able to field a full squad for this meeting with Mudgee, unlike last month's 74-5 hammering at Jubilee Sportsground where CSU played the entire game with 14 men.

CSU were never in the game last weekend in a 64-0 loss to the Narromine Gorillas - one of the more unusual grand final rematch scorelines you'll ever see - but that hasn't shattered their confidence ahead of the closing game for the year.

Plunkett said the important thing is that there was still a level of determination to the way the team played.

"Even though last week the score was one sided there was no doubting the effort, and we want to build on that for this week," he said.

"It was a young group of guys thrown together and they showed us the way a bit. With a bit of the first grade side back we can hopefully build on that performance.

"There is no pressure on us but we want to perform well in our last game, and we want it to be a springboard for next year. It's not a dead rubber for us by any means."

A bit of sun and a fun atmosphere will go a long way in the eyes of Plunkett.

"It's our family day so hopefully the weather is kind to us and that we'll be able to have a good day of rugby," he said.

"We've put out an invite to the parents of our players and it's always a great day out. It's nice to have it on the last day of the season."

CSU's only win for the season remains their 15-12 victory over Dubbo Rhinos in round one.
