The Georges Plains trainer watched on in delight as his son Doug drove the three-year-old colt to a second straight win, taking out Wednesday night's For A Reason Pace (1,730 metres) at Bathurst Paceway.
Crazy Shippo ($5.50) found space down the inside of the track over the last 200 metres of the race to force his way past race favourite Platinum Promise ($2.90, Mat Rue) and challenge for the victory.
Sharp Shooter ($9.50, Nathan Hurst) was the only horse standing in his way, and the pair battled it out over the final strides.
Crazy Shippo got the nod by a short half head at the post, claiming his fourth career win in a 1:59.0 mile rate.
Platinum Promise had to settle for third.
Winning driver Doug Hewitt didn't have everything go his way in the running, and was happy to see the opportunity present itself along the home straight.
"He didn't get out of the gate as good as he can and he didn't end up as far forward as I thought he would. And we struck some trouble around the top when the horse galloped underneath me and nearly tipped me out," he said.
"We had to reevaluate, ended up getting a nice split down the inside and I was lucky that he was good enough to finish it off.
"He's better off with the sit, because he likes that nice, cosy, hidden-away run along the fence. He has a nice turn of foot and he showed that tonight."
Hewitt said it's always difficult to assess how Crazy Shippo will handle his races, given he can sometimes find an extra gear he doesn't have back at his George Plains stable.
"When we first got him we didn't have that high an opinion of him to be honest. But whatever he does at home you can't take that into account because he seems to be 10 times better at the track," he said.
"That's back to back wins for him now. He's nice and fresh and you hardly have to work him so we'll press on with him and hopefully he can keep this going."
It wasn't a night for the favourites at Bathurst Paceway, with just one saluting for the meeting.
