The region has been buffeted by wild weather this afternoon, with high winds bringing down trees and sleeting rain lashing the city.

Traffic on both the Mitchell Highway and Mid Western Highway was impacted by fallen trees this afternoon while Bathurst SES has also responded to a number of call-outs.

And snow has just started falling in Oberon, with forecasters expecting heavier falls as the night progresses before clearing tomorrow morning.

It's all just the start of what is set to be a below average weekend for Bathurst temperatures.

The mercury will hit a high of just nine on Saturday, followed by 13 on Sunday, 7.5 and 3.5 degrees below the September average of 16.5 for Bathurst respectively.

The minimum temperature on the weekend is also set to be below the September average of 3.4, with a low of one degree forecast for Saturday and -1 on Sunday.

The maximum temperature is expected to pick up early next week, with a high of 15 on Monday and 18.

However, the minimum will stay below average with a low of -1 on Monday and one on Tuesday.
