The museum saw around 600 visitations from Saturday through to Monday, the public holiday not deterring people from exploring the new facility.
Mayor Bobby Bourke wasn't surprised people wanted to get out and about in Bathurst over the long weekend.
"I did expect a lot of people to be coming through, not just Bathurst, right across the region," he said. "People are getting out now."
He said the children's play area continues to be one of the most popular attractions of the museum.
It is so popular that the museum recently implemented a booking system for the area to help meet demand while keeping the number of people there at any one time low.
Among Monday's visitors was the Dunstan family, who travelled from Rozelle in Sydney's inner west.
They admitted they "didn't know what to expect" from the museum, but ended up spending more than an hour there, with young children Archie and Jack thoroughly enjoying the play area.
Cr Bourke touted the features of the play area, including the sound board, the Brio wooden toy set and the phones that kids could talk to each other with.
"It's all one really good package and that's why I think it's taken off so good. It's something the whole community can enjoy here; the mothers have time out here with their coffee, the kids are relaxed," he said.
He encouraged anyone who hasn't visited the rail museum yet to take the opportunity, as he doesn't think they'll be disappointed.
