With the community gearing up to celebrate the Bathurst 1000 a little bit differently this year, mayor Bobby Bourke is calling on local race fans to enjoy the event with a barbecue in the comfort of their own homes.

Cr Bourke is encouraging the community to show their support online this Sunday using the hashtags #BBQ4Bathurst1000 and #HappyBathurstDay.
And for those fans with extra dedication, he is inviting locals to showcase their own 'man caves', something he himself has been putting together at his Kelso home over the past four years.
"Every man's got to have a man cave, and one of the key reasons I bought this house was to have a dedicated space for relaxing with a few mates and enjoying some live sport," Cr Bourke said.
"While we can't all be at Mount Panorama to enjoy the Bathurst 1000 as per usual, I encourage all local fans to invite up to 20 people [friends and family] around for a relaxing barbecue."
Cr Bourke's 'man cave', complete with the appropriate 'Bourke's Backyard' sign out the front, features all the items one might associate with such a set-up, including a wall-mounted television, couches, mini bar and pool table.
It also includes a series of knick-knacks, such as surfboards, model boats and planes, he has collected over the years through his association with the Bathurst Community Op Shop.
"I've put a lot of time into it; the sports memorabilia is a must with man caves but with an op shop, you're always bound to come across hidden treasures," Cr Bourke said.
"Supercars film crews are coming here later this week to film a 90-second ad for the Bathurst 1000 broadcast, so I'm looking forward to showcasing the man cave."
Last week, Cr Bourke launched a campaign to support local butchers during race weekend, and has reaffirmed his call to shop local while enjoying the Great Race.
"This will be a weekend for local butchers as much as it is for the race, so I encourage everyone to back their nearest butcher," he said.
A lifelong motor racing fan, Cr Bourke said the event is among the premier races in the world, and hopes everyone will keep the Bathurst 1000 buzz loud in lieu of regular proceedings.
"It's going to be different, but we have to keep the spirits up and celebrate the race in our own unique ways," he said.
"I hope visitors travel to and from Bathurst safely and closely follows the event's COVID-safe guidelines, and hopefully things will return to normal in time for the 2021 event."
The Bathurst 1000 will get under way on Thursday.
