In Holden's final ever race before the manufacturer ends its support in Australia, the Triple Eight team, the official factory team of the red lion in Supercars claimed an emphatic victory to round out the 2020 Supercars Championship.
Van Gisbsergen put together a perfect performance on the biggest stage in Australian motor sport, to claim his maiden win at Mount Panorama on his 14th attempt and book his place in history as a Bathurst 1000 winner.
Here is what the Red Bull Racing star, and others who tackled the Great Race, had to say:
Shane van Gisbergen, #97 Red Bull Holden Racing Team
"How unreal is that? The last 60 laps were so intense, and all the safety cars made it really tough, but it was an awesome job all day by Garth and the whole team as well," he said.
"The car just got better and better throughout the day and the last couple of stints were really cool to drive. I've had some bad runs at Bathurst in the past, and today was all about making no mistakes. I made sure I capitalised when it rained - I got to the front and never let go of it.
"We've been the factory team for the last couple of years, and to not have Holden support racing anymore is devastating, but to win the last Bathurst 1000 for them was something pretty special."
Jamie Whincup, #888 Red Bull Holden Racing Team
"I'm rapt for the team - massive day, particularly for the 97 crew. They made it happen, Shane made it happen in the middle of the race when he passed cars and got to the lead and then 60 qualifying laps to the end was really impressive to watch. I wish I was part of the battle," Whincup said.
"The pace they had, I'm pretty sure our car would have had the same so it was disappointing to not be out there cutting laps at that pace like he was. All in all, I'm aware that at Bathurst you win some, you lose some.
"In hindsight I wish I would have done it a little bit differently, but Brodie (Kostecki, co-driver car #99) was playing a tough game and it got the better of me. I underestimated the surface temp of the tyres and in a normal situation it would have been fine, but I just turned in with the rears still on fire and oversteered and hit the wall.
"Thankfully, the car is nowhere near as bad as it looks so we'll be able to just bolt a couple of wishbones on and it'll be ready to go in a couple of hours. I'm not sentimental but seeing Shane drive around with the Holden flag out the window made me reflect on all the people who have supported the brand, all the people who've worked for Holden, all the fans - there are so many passionate people associated with this Aussie brand. I so hope they were watching that last lap and felt the win as much as we did in the garage."
Cameron Water, #6 Monster Energy Racing
"I gave it absolutely everything I could, they just did a little bit better job than us. Those safety cars were probably just another chance for me to try and get in front somehow, the first one (Shane van Gisbergen) was probably a bit vulnerable at (Turn) one and two, and over the top I was close enough to, I thought, maybe have a lunge, but (I was) just not quite there," Waters said.
"And then the next one I thought I might as well try and push him the whole way until he goes, which it kind of half worked, but he just put his car in the right spots which made it bloody hard. Hats off to their team, they drove awesome all day, they deserve the win. They didn't put a foot wrong and they had a fast car."
Chaz Mostert, #25 Walkinshaw Andretti United Racing
James Courtney, #44 Boost Mobile Racing
"That was a lot of hard work for 10th. The Boost Mobile Mustang was pretty solid today but not quite as quick as we needed to get to the front," he said.
"The team did a great job, Broc Feeney was fantastic - it's hard to believe he only turned 18 today, he didn't put a wheel wrong - it's always good to be in the 10, but it's Bathurst and you're never happy unless you're first.
"It wasn't our day, but really proud of the Boost Mobile Racing team for the work they've put in this week, and all year."
Jack Le Brocq, #55 Supercheap Auto Racing
"The day was going all right, the Supercheap Auto Mustang was cruising along pretty well and we were looking pretty solidly in the top 10," he said.
"Then yeah, at some point I started getting fumes in the cabin. I'm not entirely sure how it all happened, but with around 40 to go I started getting a bit dizzy, and eventually decided I had to bring it in, I just didn't trust myself with the car with how I was feeling.
"Moff and the team did an awesome job all day and things were looking pretty good, so it's a bitter way to end it. Big thanks to the team for the effort over the past few months, not the way we wanted today to go, but really proud of everyone for their work and commitment."
Lee Holdsworth, #5 Truck Assist Racing
"That was as tough a seventh place as I think we'll ever have," Holdsworth said.
"We had no comms for all of Caruse's run, and because of that when he got out and I got in we didn't know the cool suit had malfunctioned. Doing 65 laps in there was absolutely brutal, I was glad to get it home. Seventh obviously isn't what we wanted, but I don't think we could have done much more in the Truck Assist Ford Mustang today.
"Congrats to Cam and Will, and the whole Tickford team. To do all we've done over the last three months without being home is pretty special. I think we've all earned a little downtime, but we're certainly eager to come back stronger in 2021."
Scott McLaughlin, #12 Shell V Power Racing
"First off, congratulations to Shane and Triple 8 racing for their win, they were faultless all day," McLaughlin said.
"I'm proud of everyone at Shell V-Power Racing because it's been an awesome year. It's been hard for a lot of teams including ours, but I'm just proud to bring home the bacon.
"I think the camaraderie between the teams has been the most enjoyable thing this year. Last year it was pretty full-on, tit-for-tat, but this year everyone knows how hard it's been for everyone, and there's been a lot of good, hard racing.
"It's probably the best racing we've ever seen, and we probably had the most at stake because we didn't have the turn around times to come home and fix the cars. Especially the Victorian teams. A credit to those teams for the sacrifices they made for the sport and also to the volunteers who've kept the sport going. I wouldn't be in this position if we didn't have great people in our sport, so I'm really proud of that."
Fabian Coulthard, #12 Shell V Power Racing
"As a team, we would have loved to have won the race. But a fourth and fifth for two cars isn't too bad, and we wrapped up the Teams' Championship," he said.
"So there were a lot of positives to come out of today. Having said that, we would have loved to have been on the podium."
Anton De Pasquale, #99 Penrite Racing
"I had a really good start and got up to third. It's a position you want to be in a race like this, but we slowly dwindled away to the back of the top 10," he said.
"Our car was good, we just have no straight-line speed, so we were getting attacked by everyone behind us down the straights. It was still a good result to get ninth and finish out the good season we have had. Ultimately, we ran a good race and we went mistake-free for most of it. We just didn't have enough horsepower and in motor sport that makes it hard.
"The time on the road has been good. It's disappointing not to finish how we wanted to do today because had the ability to do a
David Reynolds, #9 Penrite Racing
"Unfortunately, anything can happen at Bathurst and today was a tough one for us. We actually started well from 13th and got up to legitimately seventh," he said.
"We lost a bit of time at one point but were still able to crawl back to that top ten position, then we had an engine drama which saw us finish a lap down. It's really unfortunate as it's the race that means so much to everyone, but there will be plenty more to come."
"It's been a long time away and we've had some great results, and some OK results but as a team we should be proud for what we have done and achieved this season."
André Heimgartner, #7 NED Racing
"It was an interesting race, for us it was going pretty good and then unfortunately we made a mistake with choosing to go on the wet tyre during the shower. That was a bit disappointing but we had a good comeback, the team performed really well which is positive," he said.
"The car was quite good during the race, Dylan [O'Keffee] did everything we asked of him in the race and kept out of trouble which was good to see and that really put me in a position where I was able to push and move up through the grid in my stints.
"There was obviously a lot of carnage out there from some young drivers so really pleased with Dylan's driving.
"It's good to put a close on this year, the guys have obviously been away a long time and it's great that they can now all go home and see their families after almost four months away. We'll come back stronger next year, we learnt a lot in this season about what we need to go faster so hopefully we can do that and move forward."
Rick Kelly, #15 Castrol Racing
"It was a bit of a bummer after we did a really good job of preparing the car for this one, we didn't make the shootout which meant we had the whole day yesterday to prepare. I came here today ready to go and wasn't really nervous at all which is a big thing at this race usually," Kelly said.
"But unfortunately as I took off to start the warm up lap we had an issue with the clutch and our race was done from that point. So I rolled around, started the race, I don't actually know how we got it off the line to start with because the clutch was fried at that point.
"I stayed out way longer than we had planned for the first stint while the guys figured out how we could rectify the problem.
"We pitted and couldn't fix it in the stop so we had to bring the car into the garage and replace everything. We re-joined seventeen laps down but I'm just proud of the guys, no one gave up, we still finished the race in 17th.
"It hurts a little bit more because we had a really good car here, I think if we didn't have the problem we would have had a shot at a really good result but we certainly leave with a positive of being able to finish the race despite that issue."

DEWALT Racing's pairing of Scott Pye and Dean Fiore and IRWIN Racing's combo of Mark Winterbottom and James Golding have placed sixth and eighth respectively in Team 18's best finish at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
As the final round of the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, this result ensured Pye and Winterbottom sealed ninth and tenth respectively in the drivers standings, as the teams championship saw Team 18 rise to sixth place in its first year as a two-car squad.
In doing so, Team 18 has leapt past Kelly Racing, Brad Jones Racing and Walkinshaw Andretti United in the teams points which dictate the all-important pit lane order for the following season.
The day started dramatically for the DEWALT Racing Holden, with Dean Fiore parked up with low oil pressure on Mountain Straight on the out-lap of the traditional 20-minute warm-up session.
This proved to only be a failure of the oil pressure sensor, which the team repaired before taking the start.
West Australian Fiore made a clean start from 12th and drove the opening 48 laps, longer than any co-driver in the first stint, before Pye jumped in for a double stint.
Pye spent the majority of his laps in fuel conservation mode, but steadily climbed into the top ten and sat ninth with 50 laps remaining when he made some ground on the front-runners.
Pye passed Jack Le Brocq for eighth at Forrests Elbow on Lap 135. and then Brodie Kostecki at Griffins Bend for seventh place before making his final pit stop with 21 laps remaining.
Pye passed team mate Winterbottom for sixth on Lap 145 and withstood the final two safety car restarts to finish narrowly behind series champion Scott McLaughlin in sixth. This was co-driver Fiore's personal-best finish in the Bathurst 1000.
Starting 18th, a gear position sensor issue on the start meant Golding took off in the IRWIN Holden in second gear when the dash was reading neutral, and he ran last for the opening three laps of the race.
Golding quickly made amends from his start and charged through the back markers and made up 11 positions to 14th place before handing over to Winterbottom on Lap 14.
As the track gripped up the IRWIN Commodore came to life and they climbed up to sixth by the halfway mark of the race.
Winterbottom remained fifth ahead of teammate Pye after the final stop, but lost a spot to Pye and then Holdsworth on Lap 145 and came home in a strong eighth place.
With the Bathurst 1000 concluding the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, the Team 18 crew will return to their homes in Victoria tomorrow for the first since they left 105 days ago.
Team 18 will continue to field two cars in the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship for Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye, with further announcements regarding next season to be made in due course.
Attention now turns to the Repco Supercars Pro ESeries, where James Golding will represent Team 18 in the online racing competition commencing on October 28.
Scott Pye, #20 DEWALT Racing
"We asked a lot of Dean [Fiore] at the start of the race. The first safety car fell a bit short of the window to get me in, so we gave him a full double stint first up and he was just awesome," said Pye.
"We didn't drop below our starting position and that put us in a good spot for the end of the race when I got some clean air and we were able to show the car speed we had.
"There were cars behind that had fuel in hand on us, so it was really important for us to get past Le Brocq and Kostecki and try to put some air between us.
"I think our speed was about where we finished in sixth, so really happy for the team who did an amazing job, we had some challenges throughout the day but they never gave up.
"I'm stoked to come home ninth in the championship in our first year together, we're always chasing better so It's not where I want to end up, but it's a good start for where we want this team to go."
Mark Winterbottom, #18 IRWIN Racing
"We started 18th but an issue with the gear position sensor on the dash put Jimmy a fair way back off the start, but we had some good pace early in the day to bounce back," said Winterbottom.
"We lost a bit of power steering with about 50 to go the end and we had an engine issue with about 40 laps to go with smoke and oil dripping out. so we had a few little issues to navigate.
"To have two cars in the top 10 for Team 18 at Bathurst and the championship is a great way to end a tough year."
