The tree fell at about 9am on Monday following heavy rains across the city.
Warwick Smith, who lives in the street, said he head "a big crack" just before 9am and looked out the window to see the huge gum tree had disappeared from view.
He said the apple gum was about 25 metres in height and had been there since they moved to the street in the '80s.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Mr Smith called the SES immediately and went to inspect the damage.
He said it appears the tree's branches has nicked the back of a 4WD which was parked in the street.
The tree also burst a water pipe as it fell, with Mr Smith able to turn off the water to minimise any further damage.
"It just missed that low voltage pillar, which is really lucky or we would have had all sorts of sparks going everywhere," he said.
Mr Smith said he rang the SES as soon as it happened.
"They got here pronto," he said.
Mr Smith said along with the heavy rain over the weekend, there had been howling winds coming into the street from the east all night last night.
SES crews are at the scene now assessing the incident and will begin moving the tree.
