How would officers fill their days if they no longer had to waste time chasing idiots who just can't make the right decision?

It's an interesting question, and a frustrating one.

The latest acts of stupidity needlessly tying up our officers come from those drivers who seem to think Bathurst roads are their own personal playgrounds.

These are the clowns who speed around town, race each other at the lights or wreck their tyres doing burnouts in suburban streets.

The sad thing is many of them likely think they're doing no harm and lack the foresight to imagine just how quickly - and catastrophically - things could go bad.

They don't consider what might happen if a child wanders onto the street just as they're speeding past their home.

They don't consider what might happen if a car comes the other way just as they're laying rubber on both sides of the road.

They don't consider what might happen - to them or passersby - if a tyre blows and they lose control of their car at speed.

Instead, it's left up to police officers to do their thinking for them and, in a perfect world, up to the courts to decide how best they should be punished.

But, if nothing else, at least idiots are doing their bit to keep people employed.

Without them our police force would be much smaller, we'd need fewer doctors and nurses working in the emergency departments of our hospitals and even panel beaters would have less work to do.

So as we try to rebuild the economy after the devastation of coronavirus, should we consider an idiot-led recovery? Perhaps not; even in this topsy-turvy year maybe that's probably one step too far.

Far better would be for the idiots to grow up just little. That can't be too much to ask.
