The shelter has been built just inside the perimeter fence at the corner of Piper and Peel streets and Denison College Bathurst High Campus principal Ken Barwick said it was making a big difference.

"This is all about student safety," Mr Barwick said.

"We needed a shelter big enough to cope with hundreds of kids each afternoon so we could get them to their bus in an orderly and responsible fashion.

"With students out on the footpath, it was difficult to stay in control, but having them gather in the one location on school grounds meant we could monitor movements much more efficiently and safely."

Bathurst MP Paul Toole aid the shelter was funded through the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme (CPTIGS).

The scheme provides subsidies to support the construction or upgrade of bus stop infrastructure, generally owned and maintained by local councils across rural and regional NSW.

"The large shelter for Denison College was designed in collaboration with the council and the support of Department of Education's road safety education officer to provide a safe space for up to 840 students to wait for their bus," Mr Toole said.
