The findings, which came after a four-year inquiry, claims 19 current or ex-special forces soldiers that served during the Afghan war should be investigated by police over killings of "prisoners, farmers or civilians" in 2009-13.

The ADF blamed crimes on an unchecked "warrior culture" among some soldiers.

And while Mr Mills said the findings are disappointing but not surprising, he wants to highlight the support that is available at the sub branch for ex-service men and women.

"It's an ongoing investigation. There'll be due process and in some cases there may be criminal action taken," he said.

"Obviously as an organisation we're concerned with the fallout. We're concerned with the welfare of veterans right across the board, not necessarily the ones involved in the units concerned.

"We have processes in place to service those veterans."

Mr Mills said the recent findings may, but not always, trigger post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other mental health problems.

"Any sort of issues raised, especially if it has negative connotations to their service, may be a trigger to any PTSD or mental health issues," he said.

"That's not automatically going to happen, but it is an issue that has to be a concern.

"There's a hole range of men and women that have served and their service needs to be honoured.

"We would encourage people struggling to come here. We meet on a Friday for a coffee, which is a time to chew the fat in an informal matter.

"If there's signs of mental health issues, we need to talk to them. We need to make sure they're receiving their due support and compensation."

While Mr Mills agreed that the findings are damning, he did note it's a small percentage of soldiers and is not a reflection of the culture of serving soldiers.

Australia has had forces in Afghanistan since 2002, following the overthrow of the Taliban, as part of a US-led coalition.
