Hamstrung star Sharma, who trails only Virat Kohli on the ODI batting rankings and was the leading run-scorer at last year's World Cup, will miss the entire three-match series that begins at the SCG at 2.40pm AEDT.

Sharma's absence is likely to result in Mayank Agarwal or KL Rahul opening alongside Shikhar Dhawan, although Shubman Gill is another option for the tourists.

"He is obviously a great player and someone who has had quite a bit of success against us in the past. It is unfortunate," Finch said, when asked about Sharma's absence.

"You want to play against the best players all the time but whoever is going to replace him, possibly Mayank Agarwal, has been in great form as well.

"You take away a lot of experience but you also bring in another quality player."

Agarwal and Rahul scored a combined 1094 runs while opening together for Kings XI Punjab during the recent Indian Premier League season.

"Form in any format, whether it is grade or Test or anything between, matters," Finch said.

"Form is form.

"It's nice to be getting runs and feeling good."

Finch's own IPL campaign, when he played under Virat Kohli at Royal Challengers Bangalore, was more underwhelming.

Finch managed 268 runs at 22.3 from 12 knocks for Bangalore, who dropped the opener then redeployed him at No.3 during their knockout final.

"T20 cricket can be really difficult when you're not quite at your very best," Finch said.

"When you're trying to be really aggressive at the start of an innings, take risks early.

"If it's not going 100 per cent, you can get into a pretty bad run quite quickly."

Finch has since done some remedial work on his technique with personal mentor and Australia's assistant coach Andrew McDonald.

"Just a few balance things, head position, my stance and small things like that," he said.

"It hasn't been anything huge.

"Just a few steps I generally go to when things haven't been as smooth as what I would have liked."
