Hung Van Tran, 63, had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Christopher Elston outside the Melbourne Market in Epping in August 2019.

Mr Elston had been travelling at about 80km/h - almost double the speed limit.

His bike skidded for nearly nine metres before colliding with Tran's produce truck.

The Melbourne father was found conscious and breathing, but died in hospital that night.

Tran told police at the time the motorbike was travelling very fast and that he couldn't brake quickly enough.

The Vietnamese-Australian former refugee faced Judge Damian Murphy on Friday at the Victorian County Court, where he was sentenced to eight months in prison.

Judge Murphy said Tran had shown remorse and responsibility for his actions through his cooperation with police after the incident and his early guilty plea.

He said Mr Elston's conduct was a "material contributing cause" to the crash and his death.

Had Mr Elston been riding at the 40km/h limit, Judge Murphy said, he would have been able to avoid the collision or reduce the impact speed.

Mr Elston's sister Nicole said her life would "never be normal again", with the "constant thought of his death preying on her mind".

"Sometimes I'm so angry I feel like my heart will burst from my chest," Mr Elston's mother said in another victim impact statement tendered to the court.

Tran, who had no prior convictions and returned a negative blood test result to drugs and alcohol following the crash, has been disqualified from driving for 18 months.

The father of three has already served 72 days in pre-sentence detention.
