Since he first sat in the gig 21 years ago Betts has not had the biggest team nor as many drives as many others across the region, but each season he still steers a handful of winners.
This year Betts has enjoyed winning doubles at Young (July 14) and Parkes (August 16) and he did it again at Dubbo as he got the job done with both $51 outsider Cobbity Castle and $2.10 favourite Dinosaurus Rex.
Cobbity Castle, a five-year-old Aces N Sevens x Cobbity Charm mare, had been part of Betts' double at Parkes but given that was her only win in 32 starts, she was not favoured by punters on Sunday.
From barrier five she settled five-back in the running line in the Join The NSWSOA Pace (2,120 metres), then after momentarily settling last, Betts got Cobbity Charm off the pegs.
After a 30.4 seconds third quarter Cobbity Castle had improved to second, at that stage sitting 5m back from leader and short $1.06 favourite Watch And Weep.
But she kept coming for Betts to spring the upset, winning by 1.8m.
That win came in the first race while Dinosaurus Rex, who's mother Verroom was the first winner Betts drove in October 2009, took out the last.
He won by 4.2m over Prettyboytom ($7.50).
