CHARLES Sturt University vice-chancellor, Professor Andrew Vann, has announced his retirement after almost a decade in the role.

Professor Vann, who took over as vice-chancellor from Professor Ian Goulter in 2011, said it had been an honour to do the job.
He started a six-month sabbatical in June, which a CSU spokeswoman said at the time had been agreed to prior to the coronavirus outbreak, which has caused a complete shake-up of the university sector in Australia.
For CSU, that shake-up has included a reduction in courses and cuts in staff numbers as the university seeks to address its deficit.

In a statement released by the university, Professor Vann said 2020 had "been a very disruptive year for everyone and after a period of reflection during sabbatical I believe it is the right time to move on to the next phase of my life".
He said he was attracted to the university "because of its leadership and track record in professional, regional, Indigenous and online education, and responsible environmental stewardship".
"Charles Sturt University has amazing people who are absolutely dedicated to their work and their communities," he said.
"I am very proud to have worked with them to help the university further its aims."

Chancellor Dr Michele Allan said she thanked Professor Vann for his leadership.
"Andy led the university through a period of incredible growth, and through some challenging times," she said.
Professor Vann's term was due to end in December 2021.
Professor John Germov has been appointed as acting vice-chancellor while the recruitment process continues.
